Nail Pops and Settling Cracks in a Slab House, and Which Ones Actually Matter

Sooner or later every slab-on-grade house in this valley grows a line of little bumps down a hallway wall, or a thin diagonal crack out of a bedroom door corner. It arrives quietly, usually noticed for the first time on a bright afternoon when the sun rakes along the wall at a low angle and throws a shadow off something that was invisible at midday.
The reaction is almost always the same, and almost always wrong in the same direction. Homeowners either panic about the foundation, or they buy a tub of filler and smear it over the lot. Neither is right. Most of what you are looking at is a house doing exactly what a house sitting on inland soil does, and it can be repaired permanently if you understand what caused it. A small fraction of it is worth taking seriously. This is how to tell the two apart.
Why the Drywall Is Always the Thing That Cracks
Think about what is actually holding up your wall. Concrete slab. Pressure treated bottom plate bolted to it. Studs nailed to the plate. A top plate. Then a sheet of gypsum, half an inch thick, screwed across the studs.
Every material in that stack has some give except the gypsum. Wood flexes and compresses across the grain. Steel connectors have a bit of play in them. Concrete is enormously strong in compression and simply rides on the soil. Gypsum board is stiff in its own plane and brittle. It has almost no capacity to deform without cracking.
So the drywall is the strain gauge for the whole assembly. When anything else moves by a millimetre or two, the board is where it shows up. That is not a defect in drywall, it is an unavoidable consequence of building a rigid brittle sheet across a frame made of things that move.
The Soil, the Slab, and the Season
Riverside sits on soils that change volume with moisture content. Not everywhere and not equally, but broadly, across the tracts and out through Rubidoux and Jurupa Valley, there is enough clay in the profile to matter.
Through a wet winter that soil takes on water and swells. Through a long dry summer, with irrigation off, west sun on the slab edge all afternoon and months without rain, it gives that water back and shrinks. The slab does not sit on a uniform mattress. It sits on soil that is wetter under the north side of the house than the south, wetter next to the lawn than under the driveway, wetter where a downspout discharges than eight feet away.
The result is a slab that lifts and settles by small amounts, unevenly, on an annual cycle. The frame goes with it. Doors that latched perfectly in March start dragging in September and then come right again. And the drywall, having no give at all, splits where it is weakest.
Nail Pops: the Fastener Never Moved
A nail pop is a small round bump, often with a ring of hairline cracking in the paint around it, and there is usually a whole row of them at the same spacing.
Here is the part almost everybody gets backwards. The fastener has not backed out of the wood. It is sitting exactly where it was driven on the day the house was built. What moved is the lumber.
Framing arrives with more moisture in it than it will hold once the house is closed up, air conditioned, and running through an inland summer. As it dries it shrinks across the grain, which is the direction that matters here. The board is held out at a fixed distance by the head of the fastener. The stud face recedes behind it. The head ends up standing proud, pushing the paper and the paint out in front of it.
Add the seasonal slab movement described above and you get the same effect happening years and even decades after the house was finished. That is why a house built in the seventies can grow a fresh row of pops next spring.
Where they appear tells you what they are:
- In a straight line at even spacing. That is a stud or a joist, and it means fastener movement.
- Concentrated on long hallway walls, which are unbroken by openings and take the most racking.
- On ceilings under a roof taking full west sun through the afternoon.
- On walls shared with the garage, where the conditioned side and the unconditioned side of the same stud dry at different rates.
Scattered bumps that do not line up are usually something else, often a bad taping job or a spot where a fastener missed the framing entirely on the day.
Why Your Filler Did Not Hold
The most common call we get in spring is from somebody who filled a wall the previous year. The bumps are back, in the same places, with a ring of cracked filler around each one.
Joint compound has no meaningful tensile strength and nothing to key into over a fastener head. If the head is still standing proud and still holding the board off the framing, it goes on pushing, and the skim of filler riding on top of it simply breaks and falls away in a ring. You have not repaired anything. You have added a layer to the symptom.
The permanent version is straightforward but it has more steps than most people expect. A new screw goes in about two inches from the old one, biting solid framing, driven just deep enough to dimple the surface without tearing the paper face. That is what pulls the board back tight against the wood. Then the old fastener is dealt with, either driven home if it will go cleanly or removed if the head has torn the paper or the hole is stripped. Both dimples get filled in coats, not one heavy pass. Then sanding, then texture, then primer.
Cracks, and Reading Them Before Filling Them
Cracks come out of the corners of openings because that is where the sheet was cut and there is less material to resist the frame going out of square. A thin diagonal running up and away from the top corner of a door jamb is the single most common crack in a tract house, and on its own it is nearly always cosmetic.
Three things separate a boring crack from an interesting one.
Direction and continuity. Short diagonals out of door and window corners are seasonal. A crack running horizontally along a wall at plate height, or one that carries on in a consistent direction through two or three rooms, is describing something bigger than a sheet of gypsum flexing.
Width, and change over time. Hairline that stays hairline is movement that has already happened. Something you can catch a fingernail in, or that is clearly wider at one end than the other, or that you can see has grown since last year, deserves more than mud. Photograph it with a tape measure held against it and a date, then look again in six months. That is a free measurement and it beats any amount of guessing.
What the doors are doing. The cheapest diagnostic in the house. If every interior door in that wall still latches and there is no new wedge shaped gap along the top edge, the frame is basically square and the crack is skin deep. If a door that always closed now needs a shoulder, the frame has racked, and the crack is a consequence rather than the problem.
The Ceiling Crack That Comes Back Every Winter
There is one crack that defeats good repair work, and it is worth naming because people spend real money fighting it.
If you have a line that opens along the joint where a ceiling meets a wall, gets to a couple of millimetres in the wet months, then closes up again by early summer, that is truss uplift. The top and bottom chords of a roof truss sit in different environments, one in a vented attic and one against insulation, and they take up and release moisture at different rates. The truss bows very slightly upward in winter, lifting the middle of the ceiling away from the non bearing wall underneath it.
No tape survives that, because the two surfaces are being physically pulled apart and pushed back together every year. Retaping it just relocates the crack. The repair that actually works changes how the ceiling is fastened near that wall so the movement is accommodated and hidden rather than resisted.
Getting It Finished So You Cannot See It
The technical part of a movement repair is the fastener or the tape. The part you will actually judge it on is the texture.
Most homes here are sprayed light orange peel. Older stock, including a lot of what sits through the Wood Streets and off Victoria Avenue, carries heavier knockdown or a hand applied finish with real character in it, and those take longer to match. A repair blends when the texture is sprayed on site, knocked down at the right moment, and feathered wide enough that there is no ridge to catch the light.
There is also a timing trap specific to this climate. Joint compound in a Riverside July skins over quickly while the body underneath is still wet. Coat over that too soon and it shrinks back on you days later, leaving a dish or a hairline that was not there when you left. Fewer, thinner coats with honest drying time between them beats trying to finish in one visit.
What We Would Tell You to Do
If you are repainting, fix the movement first, in one pass, and prime the patches before the room gets painted as a single surface. If your doors still latch and the cracks are thin, stop worrying, because that house is behaving normally for the ground it sits on. If a crack is growing, running through rooms, or arriving alongside doors that no longer close, get a structural opinion before anybody smooths it over.
And if you are unsure which of those you have, take a square on photograph with a tape held against the crack and call. Plenty of the time the honest answer is that there is nothing here worth spending money on yet, and we would far rather say that than sell you a wall.
